The police spared the poor old woman who was illegally selling vegetables on the street — but when one of the officers leaned closer to look at her produce, she was immediately arrested
Police received a call about illegal street trading at the corner of Main Street and rushed to the scene. But when they saw a frail old woman with a box of vegetables, their determination vanished.
The woman stood beside neatly arranged tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers, dressed in a worn-out sweater and a faded skirt.
“Grandma, do you know that selling goods on the street is forbidden?” one of the officers asked calmly.
“I know, dear,” she sighed. “I just need money for medicine for my sick son. He has no one else, and there’s no one to help us. I grew all these vegetables myself in my garden. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
The officers exchanged glances. The violation was obvious, but they felt sorry for the old woman.
“We won’t take any action this time,” said the senior officer. “But please, grandma, try to find another way to earn money. Other officers might not be as kind as we are.”
“Yes, yes, of course,” the woman replied nervously, clearly eager for them to leave as soon as possible.
Before leaving, one of the policemen smiled:
“Let’s at least buy something from you — do a good deed.”
“No need, dear,” she replied quickly. “I already have
plenty of customers.”
“Plenty of customers?” his partner asked in surprise. “But there’s no one around.”
“Oh… they come in the morning,” the old lady laughed. “You just missed them.”
“Alright then, we’ll take at least a couple of tomatoes,” the officer insisted.
“No, son,” she waved him off again. “Leave them — let others have some.”
Her voice trembled, her eyes darted nervously. One of the officers frowned, bent down, and picked up a tomato from the box. He looked at it closely — and suddenly said sharply:
“Arrest her. Right now.”
“What? What happened?” his partner asked in shock.
The officer showed the tomato. On its surface were tiny puncture marks, as if someone had injected something inside with a needle. The same marks were found on the other vegetables.
Later, during the investigation, it was revealed that behind the image of a helpless grandmother was a woman distributing illegal substances.
At her home, police found her disabled son — the one producing everything — while his mother delivered and sold it, taking advantage of the fact that no one would ever suspect trembling hands and a kind old smile.
The world has long since learned how to hide evil behind the most innocent faces.
