The Stone-Faced Stray: How Petra Found Love After a Life of Fear

Last April, on a quiet street in Greece, a woman spotted a stray dog whose face looked completely frozen. Terrified, sick, and alone, the poor dog seemed on the brink of disappearing from the world. The woman snapped a photo and posted it on Facebook*, hoping someone could help.

Petra — which means “stone” in Greek — had clearly never been touched or loved by a human. She ran at any approach, trembling with fear. Saving her seemed impossible… but giving up was never an option.

Finally captured, Petra was taken to an animal shelter in Oropos. Valia Orfanidou, who had rescued countless dogs before, knew immediately she had to help.

“She had always been a stray,” Orfanidou says. “Dogs like her are usually friendly if they’ve had human contact. Petra had never been touched by anyone.”

Petra’s condition was dire. The shelter treated her for everything — from mange to leishmaniasis, a potentially deadly infection. Her stone-like coat was the result of untreated mange. Even with treatment, Petra was still terrified and distrustful.

“She trusted no one,” recalls Orfanidou. “She refused to leave her cage, hid from anyone who came near, and growled at the other dogs.” On her first attempt to approach Petra, she was so terrified she soiled herself. But Orfanidou never gave up.

Week by week, Petra grew braver. She ventured out of her cage, tolerated human touch, and slowly began to trust. Soon, she was a completely different dog — wagging her tail, playing with toys, and enjoying the company of other dogs.

Today, Petra is unrecognizable. No longer the thin, fearful stray, she is radiant inside and out. Ready to join a loving family, she is finally free to live the life she deserves.
